The Acting Humanitarian Coordinator congratulated South Sudanese on the third independence anniversary, describing it a ‘hard-won sovereignty’.

Sue Lautze in a statement on Wednesday, called on political leaders and citizens to take the celebration as an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be South Sudanese.

She said ‘while this young nation celebrates today we acknowledge with regret the many South Sudanese facing extraordinarily difficult circumstances’.

Ms Lautze added that ‘we take this opportunity to salute the people of South Sudan who are at the forefront of grassroots humanitarian action, providing assistance, friendship and compassion within and across their communities’.

She saluted health workers, field extension agents, Relief and Rehabilitation Commission staff and many others who work without salaries and support to provide care to many in need.

The Coordinator urged the national government to restore budgets to core functions including workers still in their positions in opposition held territory.

She said the humanitarian community both nationals and international partners remains in solidarity with all South Sudanese.

Ms Lautze appealed to the government and the opposition to ensure an enabling environment for the safe and effective delivery of humanitarian assistance.

She also called on all political and military leaders to show commitments to their people by allowing humanitarian organizations to urgently reach those in need.
