Sudd Institute Director criticized that the SPLM/A in opposition’s demand of including its civil society to the peace talks ”kills the meaning of civil society”.

Abraham Awolich argued that when the opposition rebelled in December, there were already civil society organizations, Bakhita Radio reported.

He clarified that the organizations do not take side on political arena but act impartial to the parties, questioning why the opposition abandoned the peace talks.

Mr Awolich said the role of the civil society in the talks is to discuss issues that the parties failed to bring on the table but not to decide on the position of the government and the opposition.

He added that the civil society organizations should discuss issues of accountability, constitutional review process, human rights abuses and humanitarian aid access.

The Director stressed that citizens should be the ones to decide on the governance system in the country and not allow self interest politicians to decide on their behalf.
