President Kiir petitions IGAD on “stupid” statement

The President of the Republic sent an envoy with a letter to Intergovernmental Authority on Development or IGAD Chairperson about its Executive Secretary Mahboub Maalim’s statement that the two sides were ‘stupid’ for believing military victory was possible.
 
Foreign Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin on Tuesday told journalists in Juba that President Salva Kiir Mayardit sent the Minister in his Office Awan Guol Riek with a letter to Dessalegn regarding what he described ‘unfortunate’ statement by Executive Secretary.
 
He added that the reply to the letter would determine the next course of action in Addis Ababa peace talks between the government and SPLM/A in opposition.
 
Dr Marial who returned from Global Summit in London to end ‘sexual violence in conflict’ said the government was committed to fight the practice by training more law enforcement agents and legal personnel.
 
The Minister urged youths to reform from destructive cultures by adopting positive attitude of respect for young girls.
 
He called for massive education on virtues of respect for women especially girls.
 
The Minister said the summit organized and co-hosted by British Foreign Secretary William Hague and UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie drew together eight thousand participants who reaffirmed and endorsed the ‘Declaration of Commitment to End Sexual Violence in Conflict’.
