Yei River County Gender Deputy Chairperson accused some parents of settling rape cases and early marriages at family level to get money, neglecting legal procedures.

Ayine James on Friday urged parents to follow legal procedures so that perpetrators account for the abuses committed, Easter Radio reported.

He observed that some parents report cases to police after violators fail to pay charges they agreed.

The Deputy Chairperson said reporting abuses to police was vital because it would ease investigations and provision of psychosocial support to the victims.

South Sudan Law Society Legal Aid Officer Data John Losukwa urged parents to consult concerned institutions and other government levels for legal advice on how to deal with perpetrators.

He called on citizens to report rape cases within 72 hours to ease collection of evidence.

The officials spoke during a Gender-based Violence Advisory Group meeting on Friday in Yei.
