Western Equatoria on Thursday commemorated International Peacekeepers Day in Yambio to remember 3200 peacekeepers killed in civilians’ protection mission.
UNMISS State Coordinator Ataklti Hailu said in 2013 alone 106 peacekeepers perished while protecting civilians, amounting to 3200 deaths, Anisa Radio reported.
He added that peacekeepers were mandated to protect civilians, promote rule of law and advance human rights all over the world including South Sudan.
The Coordinator assured the public, government and non-governmental organizations that UN would continue to protect peace and lives of civilians.
State Deputy Governor Sapana Abui said for peace to prevail it must be protected, adding that South Sudan is far behind from protecting peace.
He pledged government’s full support for peace protection and collaboration with the UN.
In another news development state Legislative Assembly Speaker Bage James Elisa commended UNMISS for the work well done and that the Mission contributed a lot to a relevant peace in the state.
The speaker hailed the State UNMISS Coordinator for enabling his forces patrol the Western Equatoria to ensure civilians’ protection and peace prevails.
