Oxfam welcomed Oslo donors’ conference pledges of funds for health investment, urging them to translate promises into concrete contributions.
In a statement, Oxfam’s South Sudan Country Director Cecilia Milan said with the outbreak of cholera in Juba and catastrophic food crisis, the fast delivery of funds to the country is paramount.
She appreciated the generosity of those nations who contributed, saying it must not stop at the point.
The additional 600 million Dollars pledge for relief efforts in South Sudan and for South Sudanese refugees in the region brings the total aid promises to 1.2 billion US Dollars.
A total 2.2 billion Dollars is needed, 1.8 billion Dollars for aid within the country and almost 400 million Dollars for regional response.
The Director pointed out that the funding gap remains vast.
Ms Milan said to prevent the crisis from escalating further, additional contributions must be made as soon as possible to give the country fair share.
She added that humanitarian actors stand ready to deliver urgently needed life-saving support.
Ms Milan called for redoubling of efforts to persuade South Sudan’s leaders to reach a lasting peaceful solution to allow safe passage.
