The Inter-governmental Authority on Development, IGAD Ambassador on Thursday strongly condemned deliberate targeting of civilians in the ongoing conflict evidenced by recent killings in Bentiu City of Unity State and April 17 Bor attack in UNMISS compound in Jonglei State.

Ambassador Mahboub Maalim expressed deep concerns over the spiralling violence across the nation, worsening humanitarian situation, Bakhita Radio reported.

He lamented that the conflict seriously disrupted economic activities and food production with imminent risk of serious famine.

The Ambassador called on the international community to pressurize the warring parties to stop the war and prevent a deeper catastrophe from unfolding in South Sudan.

He warned that the incidents constitute a grave violation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, urging the warring parties to honour their commitment to protect civilians.

Ambassador Maalim appealed to government and SPLM/A in opposition to cooperate with the IGAD Monitoring and Verification Mechanism in the ongoing investigation.
