UN Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan on Tuesday said the international community could not do enough to resolve South Sudan crisis because the future lies in its leadership and citizens’ willingness to reconcile and sort out differences.
Toby Lanzer told the press that South Sudanese should take responsibility to reconcile and rebuild the nation to make every citizen proud of the land.
He added that the international community should not be expected to determine the future of South Sudan, saying the world community only offers a supporting hand, not full responsibility.
Mr Lanzer warned that seven million South Sudanese are at risk of famine, should they fail to plant crops in the rainy season.
The Humanitarian Coordinator expressed concerns about lives of 700 thousand displaced people outside UN compounds and 70 thousand others inside the bases.
Mr Lanzer added that he has much more worry for the 700 thousand refugees since UNDP would engage those in its compounds in economic activities for self-reliance.
The Humanitarian Coordinator reiterated appeal for communities’ engagement in crop production to prevent looming hunger by the end of 2014.
