The President of the Republic on Monday told journalists that the government was in full control of security situation in Juba town after a ‘failed coup attempt’.
Salva Kiir Mayardit said the fighting started on Sunday night after an unidentified person fired shots in the air near a SPLM conference.
He explained that later a group of soldiers allied to the former vice-president Riek Machar and his group attack SPLA headquarters near Juba University and the fighting intensified.
‘I would like to inform you, at the outset that your government is in full control of the security situation in Juba”, President Kiir told journalists.
The President declared curfew from six o’clock in evening to six o’clock in the morning in Juba until further notice.
He directed the security personnel to allow people to carry out their business normally.
The number of casualties and people arrested is not yet known.
