Eastern Equatoria state on Friday launched a girl child education program funded by the UK Aid for Development.
The project Girl Child Education in South Sudan or GESS targets about 200 thousand girls in the whole country, Emmanuel Radio reported.
The head of the Education Committee in Eastern Equatoria State Assembly, Angela Ajana Pio, welcomed the project, saying it helped increase literacy rates.
MP Ajana pledged the commitment of the Legislative Assembly to support girl child education in the state.
She encouraged parents to send girls to school.
State Advisor on Political Affairs Felix Otuduha Siro called on girls to spread the message of education to others.
Mr Otuduha called on parents, teachers and nongovernmental organizations to collaborate and promote girl child education in Eastern Equatoria state.
He condemned cultures that consider girls as sources of wealth.
