The National Legislative Assembly on Tuesday ratified the United Nations Convention against torture and other cruel inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment of people.
Deputy speaker Mark Nyipuoc chaired the session that passed the ratification convention after a lengthy deliberation.
He read out the parliamentary verdict to ratify the UN convention against torture, ruling that it was passed unanimously without reservation as legislators clapped thunderously in agreement.
Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs Committee Deputy Speaker Gabriel Guot Guot said in his presentation of the Convention to parliament that South Sudan would not tolerate any form of torture or ill-treatment after endorsing the treaty.
He observed that the country would promote fundamental freedoms and human dignity.
MP Guot added that the country would receive financial and technical support to develop its legal system.
He said membership to the treaty meant institutional transformation, good governance and accountability in South Sudan.
The convention protects rights of inmates or detainees who are reportedly mishandled in the country.
Many legislators including Onyoti Adigo of Upper Nile State and Mary Kiden Kimbo of Central Equatoria State called for effective implementation of the treaty and massive education against torture and cruel punishment by security organs.
