South Sudan Human Rights Society for Advocacy or SSHURSA strongly urged national Information minister to respect the rule of law, freedom of speech, media and expression as enshrined in the Transitional Constitution.
In a statement issued on Friday signed by SSHURSA Executive Director Biel Boutros Biel, the society urged the minister to stop intimidating and harassing media practitioners.
The statement added that Minister Makuei ought to abide by values for which South Sudan sacrificed millions of lives in liberation against dictatorship.
It said unfortunate utterances of Justice Makuei were clear intimidations of the press and a violation of the Transitional Constitution.
The Society condemned the utterances of the minister as improper and unbecoming as a former freedom fighter, Justice Minister, national legislator and above all a lawyer.
The statement recommended that Minister Makuei should better published an article refuting the media report he believed was untrue about the health of the President of the Republic.
The Human Rights Society observed that Makuei’s intimidating words to the media show the destructive, bitter and dictatorial path South Sudan is undertaking.
