South Sudan is today joining the globe in celebrating International Literacy Day under the theme: ‘Literacies for the 21st Century’ in Yambio, Western Equatoria State.

The Day will be coloured by traditional dances and other activities at Freedom Square and will bring together top national and state government officials, NGOs and learners.

It aimed to celebrate improving literacy and advocate for learning within communities and renew commitment of all stakeholders to adequately support the realization of the right to literacy for all in South Sudan.

Zain mobile company will support the event by providing prizes to the best achievers.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization hopes that communities, NGOs, public and private sectors will join hands in promoting literacy for peace, social and economic improvement, and nation building.

Currently South Sudan literacy rate stands at 27 percent, one of the lowest in the world with 2.2 million people between 15 and 40 years old illiterate and only 1 in 10 women are able to read and write.
