Eastern Equatoria state Legislative Assembly condemned unhygienic handling of edible commodities in Torit market.
The move came after Health, Social Development and Gender Committee chairperson Margaret Kasara Kiwa on Monday raised an urgent and important matter on health and sanitation, Emmanuel Radio reported.
MPs called for need to burn damned meat, proper handling of vegetables, garbage collection and placing of food items on clean platforms in Omoliha market.
The MPs also called for medical checks and health certificate for traders handling food items and campaign on construction of latrines to improve sanitation in Torit town.
The recommendation followed assessment team findings that Torit lacks an abattoir for slaughtering animals.
The assessment found that animals were slaughtered in an open ground littered with human droppings and condemned meat used not to be burnt but left in the open.
Findings of the legislative team also indicated that butchers in Omoliha market were unhygienic; they do not wear aprons and cut meat on dirty wood.
The restaurants were dirty with people eating next to the cooking place, chapatti prepared in unhygienic manner and dirty water poured on the road.
Vegetable market is another place littered with rubbish, garbage mixed with mud and stagnant water.
