Prosecutor condemns imprisoning juveniles

A public prosecutor condemned sentencing of 29 juveniles to imprisonment in Torit County prison.
 
Justice Ministry Public Prosecution Deputy Director Sabri Wani Lodu who led a three-member team to Torit termed juveniles imprisonment as unlawful, Emmanuel Radio reported.
 
He said the law only allows juveniles to be sent to reformatories with vocational institution for skills training to change their attitudes
 
Justice Wani said lack of reformatory and vocational centres in Eastern Equatoria forced juveniles to be convicted in prison.
 
He pledged to forward the team’s findings and recommendations to the national government.
 
Justice Wani noted lack of health services for inmates, congestion, poor sanitation, lack of vocational training and delayed justice.
 
He also noted that suspects charged with capital offenses do not access legal rights for a defence lawyer in courts of law.
 
Justice Wani suggested that Health ministry should establish a clinic for inmates and that the Education ministry should also introduce adult school in the prison.
 
He recommended that Justice Ministry should recruit more judges and prosecutors to avoid cases delay.
