The army recommitted to protect the territories and people of South Sudan at all costs.
Army Information and Public Relations Director-General Malak Ayuen told reporters on Tuesday in Juba that the eighth anniversary of Martyrs Day was to remember the 2.5 million lives lost for the cause of the nation, Bakhita Radio reported.
He said the Day was an opportunity for thanking the heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives for South Sudan’s freedom.
Mr Ayuen added that the army was ready and would continue to protect the people and the territorial integrity of the country.
Unis Amer Manyok representing war orphans said 80 percent of South Sudanese do not enjoy peace dividends because of insecurity in Jonglei and other parts of the country.
She urged South Sudanese leaders to work hard to bring peace and harmony to citizens.
Hundreds of Juba residents gathered at the Mausoleum of Dr John Garang de Mabior to commemorate the Eighth Martyrs Day.
The number of citizens and traditional dancers went down compared to that of second independence anniversary.
