A civil society activist called on the citizens of South Sudan to ignore promises government officials will make during the second Independence anniversary celebrations.

Ateny Wek Ateny told Bakhita Radio that citizens should not to listen to government officials’ empty promises on July 9.

He denied that the Government achieved anything after two years of independence.

Mr Wek said Independence Day is a worthy celebration because it is the foundation of South Sudan’s identity.

He said President Salva Kiir Mayardit needs to deal with corrupt officials in the system.

South Sudan will commemorate its second independence anniversary next Tuesday.

Preparations are already ongoing in Juba with general cleaning along roads and Dr John Garang’s mausoleum.
