South Sudan on Tuesday joined other 40 countries to introduce new Scaling Up of Nutrition or SUN movement to tackle malnutrition.
UN agencies UNICEF, WHO, FAO and WFP are mobilizing the Government to develop a roadmap that introduces the SUN movement, Bakhita Radio reported.UNICEF representative Pelucy Ntambirweki said it was good for South Sudan to join the movement to help reduce hunger.
She said South Sudan’s nutrition is one of the most challenging factors that demand collaborative efforts and approaches.
WFP representative Christ Nikoi said the four UN agencies that signed the SUN movement with the Government want to address malnutrition issues.
He pointed out malnutrition issues are finance and economic planning issues, not humanitarian or health issues.
Mr Nikoi added that the Government needs to put a policy that can address financial issues.
Finance Deputy Minister Mary Jervas Yak welcomed the UN initiative to introduce the new SUN movement in the country.
She urged the stakeholders to keep the movement shining.
Ms Jervas said the move will enable the Government to formulate policies and actions to reduce hunger in the country.
The SUN movement is a new effort to eliminate malnutrition in all its forms.
