A watchdog wrote to the President of the Republic to use the power of his office to ensure that journalists are allowed to work freely without harassment and censure from state security officials.
Committee to Protect Journalists or CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon said in his letter that the body was deeply concerned about the deteriorating state of press freedom in South.He added that in the past six months, CPJ documented at least 12 cases of attacks, intimidation, and detention of journalists by security agents in South Sudan.
Mr Simon President Kiir “to ensure that security agents who continue to intimidate and censor the South Sudanese press face consequences up to and including criminal prosecution” to restore confidence among the local media and ensure freedom.
