Lainya County residents of Central Equatoria were divided on a debate on death penalty: some wanted the immediate suspension of capital punishment while others defended the execution of murderers.

Juma Scopus, one of the participants in the debate, said no one should de discriminated due to age: underage and old people should be executed for their crimes not to encourage criminality.

He added that pregnant and lactating mothers should be allowed to give birth and breastfeed the child because the innocent should not suffer for crimes committed by the mothers.

Justice Lodu said death penalty is correct.

He added that there should be not restriction over death penalty for those who killed intentionally.

Holy Family assist parish priest Bernard Ilugawu opposed death penalty saying life is the gift from God no one can be killed due to killing.

He urged the government to strengthen the prison system to be corrective because killing the offender is not corrective.

Fr Ilugawu pointed out that the age limit may not work this time because children have learned how to kill in videos and TV.

The comments came during a Transitional Constitution reviews process at Holy Family Parish in Lainya County on Sunday.
