The National Bureau of Statistics or NBS said in its report that illiteracy rates in Upper Nile, Eastern Equatoria and Warrap states remained a big challenge to the nation.
The director for statistic David Chan Thiang told reporters in Juba that only a third of people aged 15 and above attended school, Bakhita Radio reported.
Mr Chan said poverty still remained a major challenged in most of the rural area of the country.
He added that 69 per cent of the household in the country depend on agriculture, seven per cent on the animal husbandry.
