Illiteracy is the mother of communal fighting that is rife in most states of South Sudan.
Undersecretary in the national General Education and Instruction Ministry Deng Deng Hoch said the people behind ethnic clashes are completely illiterate young people, Bakhita Radio reported. He said those involved in the fights had no education background.
Dr Deng said education is vital for the future of the country when the oil wells dry out.
He added that education is equally important for both social and cultural reasons.
Mr Deng Deng urged the nation to focus on prioritising education instead of depending on oil which will not last more than 20 years.
