The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union welcomed the resumption of oil production by South Sudan, and its transit and export through Sudan’s oil pipeline, and the official visit of the President of Sudan to South Sudan.

Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said in a statement on Thursday that this marks another major step in the normalization of relations between South Sudan and Sudan, as well as a turning point in the economic fortunes of both countries.

She welcomed the clear commitment and political will of the two countries to √É’reboot’ their relations, and encourages them to remain steadfast on this path.

Dr Zuma also welcomed the decision of President Omar Hassan al Bashir to visit President Salva Kiir Mayardit in Juba.

She said the visit will provide a further opportunity for the two presidents to consolidate the progress made in their relations in recent weeks.

The AU Commission Chairperson urged presidents Kiir and Bashir to use the opportunity to address the remaining outstanding issues between them, including the full implementation of the Agreement on Temporary Arrangements for the Administration and Security of the Abyei Area.
