Authorities have closed down a lucrative gold mine for the second time in Nuba Mountains evoking security reasons.

Heiban SPLM-North chairperson Younan Albarut Ajour said gold mining was forbidden for the good of the community.

He explained that the place was overcrowded and the authorities suspected the presence of spies in the area.

Mr Albarut said the gold mine remains closed until all people living in the area are checked and the enemy spies flushed out.

He added that the spies could bring their own people to cause insecurity in the area.

Mr Albarut recognized that mining was a very important source of income after the National Congress Party changed currency to deny the Nuba Mountains people economic access.

It is not very clear which traders are negotiating on gold mined in Nuba Mountains.
