St Daniel Comboni Primary School pupils in Narus, Kapoeta East County of Eastern Equatoria state are on strike over power cuts in their dormitories.
Complaining of lack of electricity and laziness of some teachers to cover their lessons, the pupils chased out the school administration and brought activities at the institution to a standstill.Police on Tuesday night fired three gunshots into the air temporarily calming down rioting pupils but the situation worsened in Wednesday morning.
Parents and Teachers Association or PTA chairperson Ester Naija Iko told Radio Emmanuel that the pupils Wednesday morning mistreated the school deputy head teacher Ladu Wani Lado.
In disrespect, the pupils forced the deputy head teacher to lie on a mat and covered him with mattresses and blankets under the burning sun.
The rioting pupils also rejected attempts for talks and denied teachers entry to the school saying they did not want negotiations until Thursday.
St Daniel Comboni Boys Primary is a boarding school accommodating over 380 pupils.
Kapoeta East County Commissioner Titus Lokwachuma told to Radio Emmanuel that he directed the police to contain the situation.
St Daniel Comboni Boys Primary strike follows a similar incident at St Bakhita Girls Primary School with pupils protesting against tough rules set by the headmistress.
It took the wisdom of the County Commissioner to take the ringleaders for a study tour of other schools in the area to determine how better off they were compared to other pupils and it calmed down the protesting girls.
Both schools attract pupils from all over South Sudan and some parts of East Africa.
They are run by the Catholic Diocese of Torit to improve education in the country.
