Wau Municipality has announced preparations to seal deals with national waste management companies to collect garbage from markets in town.

Wau residential areas and markets produce a huge amount of waste which is usually burnt by citizens in the evening hours causing thick smoke and pollution, Voice of Hope reported.

Wau Mayor Michael Gaeba Ukello revealed that the deal – that was originally signed by Wau County before the municipal authority was put in place – is to expand waste collection in three main and seven minor markets.

Wau Mayor added that waste collection in residential areas will be under the responsibility of the municipality through a service delivery committee yet to be formed.

Mayor Gaeba also revealed that the State Government signed a contract with Eyat to tarmac 30 kilometres of roads within Wau, including Jur River Bridge.

He added that the asphalting starts as soon as Eyat concludes works at Wau airport.

Mayor Gaeba explained that Wau’s deadly violence last December contributed to the deterioration of the municipal finances due to constant closure of markets.
