The outgoing UK Ambassador to South Sudan said on Thursday that the Government should address human rights and security issues before it was too late.

Ambassador Alistair McPhail told journalists that the course the new nation has taken concerning freedom of press and speech was cause for concern.

He said the UK hoped that the government sorted out the issues of security so that people might feel safe and not being beaten up and robbed by those who were supposed to protect them.

Ambassador McPhail said the transformation process and the Constitution review should be transparent for the institutions to be accepted by all.

He asked political parties to stop claiming what they did in the past and prepare instead a vision for the future to be voted in 2015.

Ambassador McPhail leaves Friday to take up a new post after nine months in Jerusalem as the UK representative to the Palestinian National Authority.

Ambassador Ian Hughes, serving in Sierra Leone as UK High Commissioner, replaces Ambassador McPhail as the UK representative in South Sudan.
