A militia group believed to be from Sudan killed one person and took at least 300 cattle from three different areas of Abyei on Sunday.

Abyei Administration Executive Director Bokor Nyiar Dei told Voice of Hope on Wednesday over a phone call that the militias attacked three cattle camps in Aleu, Marial Achak and Dokura.

He said UNISFA, the United Nation Interim Security Force for Abyei, was notified about the attacks but the Ethiopian soldiers were unable to protect the civilians.

Mr Nyiar pointed out that a police force should be deployed in Abyei since the area has no internal security personnel apart from UNISFA peacekeepers.

He said UNISFA arrested one militia after the attack but later released him, a fact that should be investigated.

Mr Nyiar noted that militias were trying to scare returnees out of Abyei but they would never be threatened by such attacks.
