The Governor of the Western Bahr El Ghazal State admitted that there was negligence on the part of police forces during the demonstrations that claimed many lives in Wau in December last year.
Rizik Zachariah Hassan told the press on Friday in Juba that he notified Major General Sebit Makilele that the police should block the illegal demonstrations right from the beginning.The Governor said he suspended Major General Makilele due to police negligence.
He added that the major general is still under suspension being investigated by a committee sent by the Interior ministry.
The Governor said when the demonstrators reached the Bank of South Sudan Wau branch, the police guarding the bank had to use force to prevent the crowd from burning and looting the Bank.
Governor Zachariah said there was no time limit for the trial of the people in custody.
He explained that files were opened for the culprits who escaped detention and ran to Khartoum and Western Equatoria.
The Governor said those who escaped will be tried in absentia.
Governor Zachariah said the Judiciary of South Sudan send judges to Wau to try the people involved in the demonstrations that claimed many lives.
He added that there were eight files opened for different categories of people.
The Governor was reacting to the report released by Amnesty International accusing the government of detaining 100 people without charges.
