The US expressed deep concern about fresh border clashes between Sudan and South Sudan on disputed areas of Upper Nile and Blue Nile states, including Sudanese helicopter and artillery attacks on South Sudan’s positions.
The US embassy in Juba issued a note sent to the media houses on Wednesday saying the current tension “underscores the importance of both Parties agreeing immediately and without conditions” to establish a border demilitarized corridor. The note adds that the US is very concerned with the hike of negative statements which contributes to a dangerous increase of border tension.
The US warns that increased tensions could lead to accidental confrontations that might escalate.
The note says that the US does not have evidence of an offensive build-up in either side of the border.
The US urged both South Sudan and Sudan to refrain from any action that can further destabilize the border areas.
