UNMISS, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, chief called on the Government to ensure freedom of expression in the country, conclude a number of investigations about violations of human rights and bring the perpetrators to book.

Hilde Johnson met on Friday with the press in Juba.

She said that reports of attacks against journalists, human rights and civil society activists were deeply disturbing.

The UN representative called on the Government to reverse the trend and ensure freedom of expression.

Ms Johnson recalled the New Year’s Message issued by the President of the Republic Salva Kiir Mayardit.

President Kiir promised to take action to curb indiscipline within the security forces including the army against human rights.

Ms Johnson said those who violated human rights should be held into account, including army members who committed crimes during last year’s disarmament process.

The UNMISS chief urged the national authorities to speed up the investigation into the killing of Isaiah Abraham and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Mr Johnson said she remained very concerned about the increasing number of prolonged arrests in Wau.

She urged national and state authorities to make sure that all perpetrators were held to account and that due process was honoured.
