The national Relief and Rehabilitation Commission or SSRRC on Friday launched a Protection, Coordination and Support Unit to boost the work of humanitarian agencies in the country.

Director General for NGOs affairs Gatwech Peter Kulang said the launching of the protection unit was very important for humanitarian workers and for the Government.

He said South Sudan faced numerous manmade and natural humanitarian disasters.

Mr Peter added that the influx of Sudanese refugees and 8,000 displace people from Jonglei following communal conflict in the area needed a quick response from humanitarian agencies.

SSRRC Chairperson Peter Lam Both said the protection unit partners with agencies that work with displaced and refugees, including UNHCR and IOM.

He explained that the unit assures better protection, security, food and health assistance to refugees and IDPs.

The Protection, Coordination and Support Unit is a programme initiated by SSRRC and founded by UNHCR to coordinate and enhance rapid responses to humanitarian crises and access to international humanitarian workers.
