Abyei Region ended the academic year 2012 with a lot of challenges due to the lack of books, buildings and a good environment for education.
The situation in Abyei has been worsening since the border clashes started on May 2011, Voice of Hope reported.Alor Yieh Kuol, Director General of Education in Abyei, said that they have closed the academic year with peace in the area, but there was no good situation because of the lack of books and classrooms.
He added that another problem was lack of enough schools in the area: the few are located south of Abyei, while there are no schools north of Abyei due to insecurity.
Mr Yieh explained that, in spite of the challenges, the region has 27 basic schools and two secondary schools, one in English and one in Arabic.
He noted that Abyei directorate of education is missing teachers and teaching materials.
Mr Yieh said the P8results were ready and they would be announced in a week’s time.
He urged both government and NGOs to assist the area in the present difficult situation.
