The Khartoum Government and a Darfur rebel group have signed a truce in Doha, Qatar, on Sunday.

UNAMID, the joint UN and AU mission in Darfur, said the truce between the Government and Justice and Equality Movement Sudan splinter group was facilitated by Joint Chief Mediator Aichatou Mindaoudou and Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud.

Ms Mindaoudou said the ceasefire agreement was a major breakthrough in the road towards a comprehensive and lasting peace accord in Darfur.

She added that she hoped that such agreement would attract the non-signatories movements to join in the peace process.
