The Government of South Sudan was urged to protect freedom of expression and the safety of journalists.

South Sudan became a pilot country for the UN Plan of Action on protection of freedom of expression, safety of journalists and impunity.

The Plan of Action aims to create a free and safe environment for journalists and media workers.

UNMISS Chief Hilde Johnson said in a statement issued on Sunday that the mission welcomed the Government’s decision to increase the safety of journalists in the country and address the issue of impunity.

South Sudan fell 12 places in the freedom of expression index prepared by Reporters without Borders due to the killing of Isaiah Abraham and mistreatment of other journalists.

UNMISS, UNESCO and OHCHR will work together with other UN agencies, and national and international partners to support the development of an implementation plan for South Sudan.

UNMISS says it is paramount that all UN staff can carry out their mandate freely and without interference, in accordance with the international obligations of the Government of the Republic of South Sudan.
