Eastern Equatoria state faces inadequate health care distribution and over 679,000 people have difficulties to access health services.

State health minister Margaret Itto told the state Parliament that only a quarter of the population had access to health care.

She said Greater Kapoeta, Lafon/Lopa, Budi and Ikwotos were among the areas with worst health services.

The minister added that unequal distribution of health facilities was as a major factor for poor health care.

Dr Itto said health care gaps in the various counties persisted even when there was political will to provide equal services to every citizen in the state giving woman and children the priority.

Dr Itto explained that financial austerity measures, lack of human resources, poor structures, drug shortages and lack of ambulances were factors affecting the sector.

The minister made the statement on Monday while presenting the ministry of health policy framework to Eastern Equatoria State Legislative Assembly.
