The President of the Republic has declared war on poverty and called on state governors to strengthen the fight against hunger in the country.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit said South Sudan plans to stop importing food from neighbouring countries by 2014.

This came when the President was opening the second Governors forum in Juba on Monday.
President Kiir urged the national and state governments to step up efforts to encourage households to produce their own food in order to reduce poverty in the country.
He said South Sudan would export organic foods to neighbouring countries, Europe and the US by 2040.
President Kiir urged the participants to put in place strategies of achieving a hunger free South Sudan by 2014.
Four governors appeared in the forum and four others were represented by their deputies while two sent ministers to represent them.
The second governors’ forum was organized by the office of the President in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the theme: “Agriculture for sustainable food security and economic growth”.
The Forum that started today is expected to end on Thursday.
