The UN Security Council extended on Friday the mandate of the peacekeeping force for Abyei until May 31, 2013.
The Council also demanded that South Sudan and Sudan put in place an interim administration for the area and form a police service for Abyei, UN News reported.The Council urged South Sudan and Sudan to make regular use of the Joint Oversight Committee to ensure steady progress on the implementation of the agreement signed last June in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
UNISFA, the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei, was formed in June 2011 with Ethiopian soldiers.
The peacekeepers oversee the demilitarization of the area and maintain security.
Luka Biong, the co-chair of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee, announced that the body meets on Thursday to take the necessary measures to establish a temporary administration for the area.
The African Union told South Sudan and Sudan to resolve the final status of Abyei until December 5.
