The Deputy Speaker of Western Bahr El-Ghazal Legislative Assembly said before the House that he did not pass any order regarding Wau County headquarters transfer to Baggari.

The Assembly gathered on Tuesday in an extraordinary meeting called by Governor Rizik Zachariah Hassam to discuss issues related to youth protests against the headquarters transfer, Voice of Hope reported.

Mr Zachariah accused deputy speaker Peter Ukunjere of having denied before the protesters that he signed any order and yet the appointments of Wau Mayor and state advisors bear his signature.

The Governor however did not comment on whether there was an order from the House regarding the Headquarter transfer.

Deputy speaker Ukunjere clarified that the orders he signed appointed people to different posts.

He added that he did not sign any order transferring Wau County headquarters that is being rejected by the people.

Mr Ukunjere said nobody opposed the creation of Wau Municipality: what was under discussion was the transfer of Wau headquarters to Baggari.

The deputy speaker said with the transfer of Wau County headquarters the government were taking the head to Baggari but leaving the body behind.

Mr Ukunjere said some orders from the State secretariat lacked clarity and transparency.

He added that the House never received an official notification of the creation of Wau Municipality.

A film shot during Saturday’s meeting held at Hai Salam School was played before the House with protesters chanting slogans of “Wau remains, Wau in place”.

Mr Ukunjere and other MPs from Wau County rallied in support of the youth in opposition to the headquarter transfer.

The meeting ended without any clear decision whether the transfer order was reversed.

Wau MPs were asked to tell the protesting youth to reopen the Baggari road as the security committee continued investigations.

Baggari residents said they did not want Wau County headquarters at their payam.
