Girls are as important as boys in family and in society and they rights should be recognized.

This is the view the Director for Child Welfare in the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Celina Peter shared with CRN while South Sudan gears up for the first International Girl Child Day celebration on Thursday.

She disclosed that the celebration in Juba takes place at the Technical Secondary School in Buluk.

Ms Peter said the theme of the celebration was “Because I am a girl, I am discriminated against, I am not considered in the family and the society as useful human being or as important.”

She explained that girls like boys have their rights including school and time to play and study.

Ms Peter added that girls should not marry before they were mature.

International Girl Child Day was fixed by the UN last December to promote girls’ human rights, highlight gender inequalities between girls and boys and address the various forms of discrimination and abuse suffered by girls around the globe.
