The UN Secretary-General has congratulated the Governments of South Sudan and Sudan for signing a number of agreements on security, common border and economic relations.
Ban Ki-moon said in a statement that the agreements provide vital elements in building a strong foundation for a stable and prosperous future between the two countries. He praised Presidents Salva Kiir Mayardit and Omar Al-Bashir for demonstrating the statesmanship that made a comprehensive agreement possible, and for having once again chosen peace over war.
Mr Ban praised the “serious and constructive” participation, by both sides, in the talks that took place in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, under the mediation of an African Union panel led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki.
