Vice-President Riek Machar Teny told the UN General Assembly that South Sudan had to deal with enormous challenges during its first year of independence.

He said the nation was tested enormously by conflicts within and beyond its borders, by severe economic hardship and by severe abuse of the public trust and funds.

Dr Machar added that the Government was taking serious corrective measures and institutional capacity building to address corruption in order to restore public confidence.

He said he hoped the new agreements with the Sudan would resolve differences on security, borders and the use of petroleum infrastructure.

Dr Machar called on the continued support from South Sudan’s friends, partners and the international community to overcome the challenges ahead.

The Vice President made these statements in his Thursday’s address to the General Debate at UN Headquarters in New York.
