Up to 250,000 South Sudanese could still be in the Sudan and at least 40,000 are ready to go home.
This was the message the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) Chairperson, Peter Lam Both, brought from Khartoum after a short visit, Bakhita Radio reported.Mr Lam told reporters at Juba International Airport Saturday morning that he met with the South Sudanese and in Khartoum alone there are some 107,000 ready to travel to South Sudan.
Mr Lam explained that he met with officials from the Sudanese ministry of Interior who promised to open land, river and air borders to enable South Sudanese to travel home.
Land and river borders between Sudan and South Sudan were closed in May 2011.
Direct flights between Juba and Khartoum were suspended on April 9 and resumed this week.
The border closure affected trade and transports between the two countries.
