The Catholic bishops and heads of diocese of South Sudan and Sudan started Wednesday in Juba their week-long plenary assembly.

The plenary covers three main topics: the situation of the major seminary, the setup of a functional secretariat for the Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SCBC) and plans to celebrate the Year of Faith.

Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir, the archbishop of Khartoum and SCBC leader, presided over the opening mass.

He said the participants in the plenary should pay attention to what God was telling them in what direction to go.

The Cardinal said although the bishops are not the owners of the Church, they are skilled in listening to God and regularly get things right.

Cardinal Zubeir commented that there is some confusion within the Church and even among its leaders about many issues.

He said the Year of Faith Ð that starts on October 11 and ends on November 24, 2013 Ð came at the right time to clear some mix-ups.

Referring to the day’s Gospel, Cardinal Zubeir concluded that it is God who beats the drum. The faithful will be happy if they adjust their steps to the rhythm.
