Civil society activists called on the Government of South Sudan to fully involve the public on political decisions to ensure full democracy for the citizens.

Today, South Sudan joined the world in celebrating International Democracy Day under the theme “Dialogue and inclusive centre for democracy”, Bakhita Radio reported.

Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO) chairperson Edmund Yakani said in a press briefing in Juba that the government made both positive and negative moves regarding democracy during the first year of independence.

He said the passing of 11 essential bills including the Political Parties Act and the establishment of the Constitutional Review Commission were great achievements.

Mr Yakani said mechanisms and commissions established by law should be allowed to operate without political interference.

He called on the commissions that were formed to speed up their work in timely manner and encouraging citizens’ full participation in their discussions.

Mr Yakani said the theme “Dialogue for inclusive centre for democracy” chosen by the Government showed a good start for the democracy in South Sudan.

He called on the government to promote public participation in all national issues.
