UNMISS, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, is calling on all South Sudanese institutions and actors engaged in Jonglei’s peace process to take immediate action to stop human rights violations in Pibor County and bring offenders to court.
The Mission said in a press release on Friday that it was concerned by the recent increase in serious human rights violations allegedly committed by some undisciplined SPLA soldiers in Pibor County.Between July 15 and August 20, UNMISS monitoring teams reported one killing, 27 allegations of torture and ill-treatment, including beatings and simulated drowning, 12 rapes, six attempted rapes and eight abductions.
The majority of the victims were women, and in some cases children and residents in Pibor County expressed fear about their vulnerability.
UNMISS chief Hilde F. Johnson said the gains of the peace process in Jonglei must not be undermined by these recent incidents.
She called on the Government to take action against the criminals.
UNMISS called for a decisive effort to demonstrate that justice is being done for the victims.
