The youth of South Sudan are kept away from decision making processes in the new nation and need to have their voices heard by the national leadership.

International Republican Institute (IRI) has launched today the Political Parties Youth Leadership Academy to bring new blood into the political arena of South Sudan.

IRI South Sudan Resident Programme Angela Wambugu said the academy wants to involve the youth in South Sudan’s political parties.

She said South Sudanese youths need to build their capacities before they enter into politics and IRI is nurturing young politicians to enable them play a greater role and influence in the processes of democratic governance.

Ms Wambugu said the academy aims at enhancing the skills of young politicians and foster greater participation in the democratic processes during the transitional period.

She added that the academy will encourage informed debate and discussion on key political processes.

The IRI official said the academy will promote impartial debate among the youth to provide a voice of reason during the transition of South Sudan.

Ms Wambugu was speaking during the launch of the Political Parties Youth Leadership Academy in Juba.

The launch drew together about 50 young men and women from ten political parties of South Sudan.
