MARIAL, 47 IN OLYMPIC MARATHON

A South Sudanese athlete was 47 in the men’s Marathon run yesterday in London, a race dominated by East African athletes.

Guor Marial, a South Sudanese refugee living in the United States, ran under the Olympic flag and clocked over two hours and 19 minutes to finish the 42.2-kilometre course.

Stephen Kiprotich from Uganda won the Marathon with two hours and eight minutes, taking gold.

Two Kenyans got silver and bronze: Abel Kirui was second 26 seconds behind Kiprotich.

The third place was for Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich who needed one minute and 36 seconds more than the winner to finish the marathon.

Sudanese runner Methkal Abu Drais was 56.

Eighty five athletes completed the 42.2-kilometre race thought London’s landmarks, including the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and The Mall.

Twenty gave up before crossing the finishing line.
