Leer County Relief and Rehabilitation Commission is urging government authorities and humanitarian agencies to assist the victims of severe floods that are affecting the county since Monday.

RRC County Director Wal Yach Gatkuoth told CRN over the phone that the rains are increasing and at least 1,500 families were displaced by the floods up to now.

Mr Yach said a team came from Bentiu to assess the situation and left Leer today after getting stuck yesterday.

He appealed for shelter materials, mosquito nets and food aid for the people who took refuge from the water in the higher lands in Leer County.

Mr Yach said MSF-Holland is already surveying for waterborne diseases among the displaced while VSF is assessing the situation of livestock in the flooded areas.

The RCC County Director added that the severe floods destroyed this year’s crops in Leer County.

Mr Yach said people were working hard to drain areas of Leer town.

He added that the road to Mayendit is cut off while the road to Bentiu is flooded in some areas and cars get easily stuck like it happened with the delegation that was returning yesterday to Bentiu and had to return to Leer.
