The University of Juba will organizing elections for a new students’ body after the former union was dissolved.
Vice chancellor Agrey Abate announced the dissolution of JUSU, the Juba University Students Union, on 22 June after a committee investigating inter-tribal clashes charged the students’ representatives to be involved in the unrest that led to the closure of the university last March.Dean of Students Lino Gwaki told Bakhita Radio that the JUSU dissolution does not means the end of the union in the university.
Mr Gwaki said the dissolution opened the way for a new JUSU leadership.
He added that JUSU’s dissolution was decided unanimously by the Dean’s Board and not by Prof Abate alone.
Mr Gwaki said JUSU’s leadership will be establishment in due course after the students put the house in order and approve a new JUSU Constitution that reflects the new reality of South Sudan.
He added that the administration had to set a body to investigate last March’s clashes instead of trying to ignore problems among students.
Mr Gwaki said the University of Juba reopened on Tuesday.
The administration is issuing identity cards to identify the students.
Classes should start on Monday.
